How to configure a PPP connection to the AHPCC using Windows 95.

 

I) Setup Dialup Networking if you do not already have it installed.

1) Click on Start, then Settings followed by Control Panel. Choose the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.

2) Select Windows Setup. Click on Communications and then Details.

3) Select the Dialup Networking option. You will need your installation disks or CD.

 

II) Add the Dialup adapter and TCP/IP protocol, if you have not already.

 

1) Click on Start, then Settings followed by Control Panel. Choose the Network icon.

2) Go into the Configurations section. If the Dialup Adapter, TCP/IP protocol, or Client for Microsoft Networks are not installed, go to step 3.

3) Install required protocols:

a) To add the Client for Microsoft Networks, click on the Add button and double-click on Client. Select Microsoft and Client for Microsoft Networks. Click on OK.

b) To add the Dialup Adapter, click on the Add button, double-click on Adapter. Go to Microsoft, choose Dialup Adapter and click on OK.

c) To add the TCP/IP stack, click on the Add button, double-click on Protocol. Go to Microsoft, choose TCP/IP and click OK.

 

You will be prompted for the Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM. Click OK to restart the system so that the changes can take effect.

 

III) Configure TCP/IP settings.

 

1) Click on Start, then Settings and Control Panel and choose the Network icon.

2) Click on TCP/IP protocol and then on Properties.

3) Change the settings as follows:

IP Address Obtain an IP address automatically.

WINS Configuration Check Disable WINS Resolution.

Gateway Leave alone

Bindings Select Client for MS Networks

Advanced Leave alone

DNS Configuration Disable DNS

 

IV) Set up your PPP connection.

1) Double-click on the My Computer icon and select the Dialup Networking icon.

2) Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

3) Give the icon a name, e.g. AHPCC LINE 1.

4) If your modem is not displayed, click on the Configure button. Your modem should be shown in the Select a Modem area.

5) Choose a maximum speed for your modem. (38400 is good for 14.4Kbps modems and 57600 is good for 28.8Kbps modems.)

6) The "Only Connect at This Speed" box should not be checked. Click OK.

7) Click on Next in the Make New Connection wizard.

8) Enter the phone number for this connection. If you have to dial special numbers to dial out or disable call-waiting before the phone number, insert them before the number and separate them with commas.

9) Select your newly-created connection icon, press the right mouse button and choose Properties. In the phone number section, make sure the Use Country Code and Area Code options are not checked.

10)Click on Server Type and select PPP from the drop down list in the Type of Dialup server section.

11)In the Advanced Options section:

a) Check enable software compression.

b) Do not check Log On to Network.

c) Do not check require encrypted password.

d) Check only TCP/IP, do not check IPX and NETBUI.

12) Click on TCP/IP settings. Check Server Assigned IP address and Specify Name Server. Add the following addresses for the Domain Name Service(DNS) Servers:

 

198.59.173.3

198.59.173.6

 

13) Leave the WINS configuration settings alone. Check Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway on Remote Network. Click OK three times.

14) In the Scripting section, add the PPPMENU.SCP file from the disk obtained from AHPCC.

 

V) And now the moment of truth. Click on the icon you just created. Enter your username and password. Click on connect. If the modem you are dialing got left in a funny state, you may need to disconnect and retry a few times. After you connect, you should be able to use the TELNET and FTP clients installed by Windows 95. If you want to install a Web Browser, you can now install Internet Explorer.

 

VI) If you want to receive E-mail using Exchange(Windows Messaging) via Internet Mail. Install Exchange(Windows Messaging) and Internet Mail (in Internet Explorer 3.X distribution). In the Internet Mail Properties, enter your Full name and E-mail address. Enter arc.unm.edu for the Internet Mail Server and then enter your account name and password.
